Announcing Starting Lab, the first incubator for undergraduate student projects
The incubator UPF Starting Lab is a program promoted by the University Pompeu Fabra and coordinated by Incubio in Canòdrom– Creative Industries Research park. It has the support of the Department of Culture, through the Catalan Institute of Cultural Industries of the Generalitat of Catalonia.
That is the 8th Incubator built by Incubio. That university incubator focuses on helping to produce Undergraduate Student Projects as was Incubio’s vision 7 years ago. This first edition of Starting Lab hosts ten students of Interactive Communication from UPF. The program promotes multidisciplinary work between different studies of the UPF, allowing to market the undergraduate student projects in Audiovisual Communication and Business Administration, and promotes collaboration between alumni and undergraduates.
Mireia Trenchs,vice provost for Teaching and Learning UPF said that “overlaps perfectly with the strategic plan of the University and that emphasizes skills; interrelates teaching, research and knowledge transfer, and encourages interdisciplinary”. Starting UPF incubator Lab is part of a more global strategic axis that drives the Pompeu Fabra University and the Faculty of Communication as the relationship and the projection of their students with the business and cultural institutions in the city. UPF had more of 12.000 students in 2016 and ranks as the second best spanish university according Times Higher Education ranking.
For six months, from December 1, 2016, students are working on their projects in Incubio’s headquarters, where they are following Incubio’s method,with the intention that these happen to be a good idea on paper to become a product that finds its place in the market. The program represents a major challenge for universities, and aims to increase a positive relationship between the talent of students and professionals in the world to promote their employment.
The three projects incubator Starting Lab UPF already have been recognized with several awards,such as a design Laus 2016 Silver and 3 Monkey Head UPC Award in 2016 Mobile category; They stand out as having a discursive, narrative or experimental, genuine innovative component of these studies in Communication Studies, which is not detected in other similar studies.
That products are cultural and artistic digital creations in various formats with a predominant innovation and audiovisual interactive media component. Some are located in well established as formats, video games or cultural or educational apps but others escape from these formats, such as interactive installations or interactive narrative formats.
